Revelation 13 introduces a figure who mimics Christ's resurrection to steal the world's worship. Learn why 'wonder' is the prerequisite for worship and how to guard your heart against deception.
Imagine a global leader, charismatic and winsome, suddenly targeted by an assassin. The world watches the footage on a loop. The wound is clearly fatal. There is a funeral, a great spectacle of international mourning, and an open casket. Then, as the cameras roll, the man simply sits up, waves to the crowd, and steps out of the casket as if nothing happened.
How would the world respond? They would be spellbound. They would be ready to follow that man anywhere.
This is the scene Pastor Daniel Batarseh painted as we sat down to study Revelation 13:3-10. While many people approach the book of Revelation with a mix of fear and curiosity about "end-times codes," Pastor Daniel showed us that this passage is actually a masterclass in the nature of worship. It’s not just a prophecy about a future "Beast"; it’s a warning about the state of our own hearts today.
The core insight that made the room go quiet was this: The Antichrist doesn't just oppose Christ; he seeks to replace Him by mimicking Him. If you want to understand why the world falls for the Beast, you have to understand the power of a counterfeit.
The Great Counterfeit: A Mock Resurrection
In Revelation 13:3, John sees one of the heads of the beast with a "mortal wound" that was healed. Pastor Daniel pointed out a detail that most casual readers miss. The language used here—"as if it had been slain"—is the exact same Greek phrasing used to describe Jesus, the Lamb, in Revelation 5:6.
This isn't a coincidence. The Beast is pulling off a stunt. He is performing a "resurrection-like performance" to dupe the masses. As Pastor Daniel Batarseh explained, "The Antichrist... will achieve this in great part by posing as Christ to the extent that he will pull off a stunt, a resurrection-like performance" (watch this moment).
We’ve seen shadows of this in history. Pastor Daniel brought up Adolf Hitler, who survived so many close-call assassination attempts that he began to boast of his own immortality. People started to believe he was untouchable. The coming Beast will take this to a supernatural extreme. Whether it is a literal resurrection permitted by God for a season or a "slimy, deceptive scheme," the result is the same: the world is stunned into submission.
How to Be Deception-Proof
This raises a terrifying question: If the deception is that good, how do we stand a chance? Pastor Daniel turned us to 2 Thessalonians 2:9-10 to show us the "shield" against the spirit of the Antichrist.
The victims of the Beast aren't just people who lacked information. They are people who "refused to love the truth." There is a massive difference between knowing the truth and loving it.
"The only way you know that you love the truth is that you obey the truth," Pastor Daniel told us (hear this at 16:08). He challenged us to look at our own lives. When the Bible contradicts your family tradition, your political allegiance, or your personal desires, what do you do? If you don't have a wholehearted commitment to obey God regardless of the cost, you are open to being deceived. The spirit of the Antichrist is already at work in our culture, subtly moving us to prioritize our feelings or our "tribe" over the clear Word of God.
The Secret Link Between Wonder and Worship
Perhaps the most profound insight of the sermon came from Revelation 13:3-4, where it says the world "marveled" and then "worshiped."
Pastor Daniel stopped here to teach us something vital about our own Sunday mornings. True worship cannot happen without wonder. We often try to force ourselves to worship, to sing louder or feel more, but we forget that worship is a response to being amazed.
As Pastor Daniel Batarseh puts it, "True worship cannot come unless we first wonder. Marvel precedes worship. Amazement comes before adoration" (watch at 23:03).
If your spiritual life feels stale, it’s likely because you’ve lost your sense of awe. You’ve stopped marveling at the real Jesus, so you aren't moved to worship Him. The world will worship the Beast because they are "spellbound" by his power. We will only stay faithful to Christ if we are more spellbound by His glory than by anything the world offers.
Pastor Daniel linked this to Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 1:18-19, where he asks for the "eyes of your heart" to be enlightened. We need a supernatural work of God to see the hope, the riches, and the power available in Christ. If you aren't "wondering" at the Gospel, you'll eventually start wandering toward a counterfeit.
A Mouth Full of Blasphemy
The Beast is described as having a mouth that utters "haughty and blasphemous words" (Revelation 13:5-6). Pastor Daniel broke down the three specific targets of the Beast’s tongue:
- God’s Name: In the Bible, a name represents character. The Beast will rail against God’s nature, His law, and His plan of salvation.
- God’s Dwelling (Heaven): Why attack Heaven? Because in a world falling apart during the Tribulation, Heaven is the only hope people have left. The Beast will mock the idea of a future realm, trying to convince people that he alone can bring "heaven to earth."
- God’s People: He will mock those who have already died for their faith to discourage those who are still alive.
The Invincibility of the Conquered Saint
The sermon ended with a difficult text: Revelation 13:7, which says the Beast was "allowed to make war on the saints and to conquer them."
Wait—how can God allow His people to be "conquered"?
Pastor Daniel pointed out the "divine passive" in the text. The Beast was allowed. Authority was given. This means that even in the darkest moments of history, God is the one holding the leash. The Beast can only do what he is permitted to do.
But more importantly, Pastor Daniel made a crucial distinction: the Beast only conquers the saints physically. He can take their lives, but he cannot touch their souls. He can destroy the body, but he cannot rob them of their inheritance.
Turning to Romans 8:38-39, we were reminded that nothing—not even death, rulers, or the Beast himself—can separate us from the love of God. "In no way does it suggest that he will be able to destroy our souls, rob us of our eternal inheritance... If anything, for those who are in Christ, we are invincible," Pastor Daniel declared (hear this moment at 45:01).
What to Remember
- The Antichrist is a Mimic: He will use a counterfeit resurrection and false miracles to demand the worship that belongs only to Jesus. Don't be fooled by power; look for character.
- Love the Truth to Stay Safe: Deception-proofing your life isn't about having more information; it's about a heart that is committed to obeying God’s Word no matter the cost.
- Wonder is the Fuel for Worship: If you find it hard to worship, spend time beholding the glory of Christ in the Scriptures until your heart becomes "warm again."
- God is Sovereign Over Suffering: The Beast is "allowed" to work for a limited time (42 months). Our trials have a expiration date, but our inheritance does not.
- You are Spiritually Invincible: The world may conquer the body, but for the believer, death is simply the doorway to the presence of the King.
Questions to Sit With
- Pastor Daniel mentioned that the "spirit of the Antichrist" is already at work. In what areas of your life are you tempted to prioritize "tradition" or "culture" over the clear truth of Scripture?
- When was the last time you truly "marveled" at Jesus? What distractions are currently keeping you from beholding His glory?
- If you were faced with the choice between physical safety and your confession of faith, what would your current habits of obedience suggest about which choice you would make?
- How does the reality that the Beast’s authority is "given" by God change the way you view the "chaos" in our current world?
