The exiles had peace on every side — no persecution, no political threats, full royal support. And that is precisely when they fell. Practical ways to apply this message to your life.

• Examine your life for the slow compromises — the small concessions you've made to the culture around you that you barely notice anymore. Nobody falls off a cliff in one step. It's a hundred tiny steps toward the edge. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you where you've drifted, and deal with it before it deals with you.
• When you see a brother or sister in open sin, do not turn a blind eye and call it grace. Love does not look away. Ezra learned about the crisis because faithful people reported it. You are not gossiping when you pursue someone's holiness — you are fulfilling one of the chief purposes of the church Jesus described in Matthew 18.
• The next time you sit down to pray and feel like you have nothing to say, open your Bible and pray God's own words back to Him. Take a promise, lay it at His feet, and say, 'Lord, You said this — I want to see it come to life.' An uninformed Bible is the reason so many people give up on prayer.
• Practice thanking God not only for what He has done, but for what could have happened and didn't. Think about the disaster you could have caused for yourself if He hadn't gotten hold of your life. That alone is fuel enough for a lifetime of worship.
• When you face a situation so overwhelming that you don't know what to ask for, simply bring it before the Lord and trust His justice. You don't need a game plan or a marketing pitch. Lay the wound at His feet and say, 'You are just. Do as You please.' The Spirit will translate your groans into perfect petitions.
