Ten gates line the walls of Nehemiah's Jerusalem, and each one exposes something about the human heart. The Sheep Gate has no bolts — the door to the Lamb of God never closes. • 2The Fish Gate had bolts and bars on the outside, but the people's hearts had no locks at all — and money walked right in. Physical safeguards are worthless when your affections are unguarded.
• 3God records every bolt, every beam, every cubit of work done in His name. The wire you connected, the floor you scrubbed, the water bottle you handed a brother — He sees it, He registers it, and He will reward it.
• 4Every believer needs a dung gate — an honest, ongoing commitment to identify and expel whatever is impure. One day in the New Jerusalem no such gate will be needed, but until then, keep the refuse moving out.
• 5The Water Gate survived the Babylonian siege without needing repair, and the Word of God has survived every siege thrown at it across the centuries. It remains undefeated. Swim in it — don't just splash.

Practical ways to apply this message to your life.

• Before you pour yourself into the next project, the next relationship, the next ambition — stop and ask: Is my Sheep Gate intact? Is my communion with God the foundation of everything else, or is it an afterthought squeezed between appointments? Nehemiah refused to touch another gate until the pathway to worship was secure. Do the same this week. Open the Word before you open your laptop.
• Examine your Fish Gate honestly. When you sit in a worship service or a Bible study, where does your mind drift? If you find yourself calculating, planning, itching to get back to business — you are the person Amos described. Repent of it. Ask the Lord to make Himself more attractive to you than your bank balance, and mean it enough to change your schedule around it.
• Find your Dung Gate. Name one sin, one habit, one pattern of thought that you have allowed to accumulate inside the walls of your life. Confess it to God tonight. If it involves another person, confess it to a trusted brother or sister this week. Holiness is not optional decoration — it is the exit through which everything toxic must pass on its way out of your soul.
• Do not despise the small, unglamorous assignments God gives you. Malkiah was a ruler, and he rebuilt the Dung Gate. The next time you are asked to scrub a floor, set up chairs, or serve in a way nobody applauds — remember that God is writing down every detail. Do it with your whole heart. The judgment seat of Christ will be full of surprises.
• Stop splashing in Scripture and start swimming. A verse-of-the-day notification is not the same as sitting under the Word until it washes you clean. Set aside time this week — real time, not leftover minutes — to read large portions of the Bible slowly and prayerfully. Let the water do its work on the grime you have been carrying.
