• Ask yourself honestly this week: Am I profiting — emotionally, socially, financially — off someone else's sacrifice in this church? The nobles of Jerusalem enriched themselves while their brothers broke their backs on the wall. Selfishness does not always look like greed; sometimes it looks like taking and never giving.
• The next time a fellow believer irritates you to the point of wanting to walk away, pause and hear Paul's voice: 'Jesus died for that brother.' Let the cross recalibrate your frustration. The price Christ paid for that person should make your inconvenience feel very small.
• If you are a leader — a parent, a pastor, a small group leader — do not let the fear of confrontation keep you from addressing what needs addressing. Nehemiah did not confront in anger or in the flesh. He confronted in love, guided by the Word. Courage without love is cruelty; love without courage is cowardice. You need both.
• Stop measuring your church's health by the energy in the room on Sunday morning. Ask instead: Do we actually love each other on Tuesday afternoon when it costs us something? Excitement fades. Brotherhood endures.
