0:00 Exodus chapter 11. Beginning in verse one. The Lord said to Moses, yet one plague more I will bring upon Pharaoh and upon Egypt. Afterward he will let you go from here. When he lets you go he will drive you away completely.
0:17 Speak now in the hearing of the people that they ask every man of his neighbor and every woman of her neighbor for silver and gold and jewelry. And the Lord gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians. Moreover the man Moses was very great in the land of Egypt, in the sight of Pharaoh's servants and in the sight of the people. So Moses said, Thus says the Lord, About midnight I will go out in the midst of Egypt and every firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sits on his throne even to the firstborn of the slave girl who is behind the hand mill and all the firstborn of the cattle. There should be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt such as there has never been nor ever will be again.
0:59 But not a dog shall growl against any of the people of Israel, either man or beast, that you may know that the Lord makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel. And all these your servants shall come down to me and bow down to me saying, 'Get out, you and all the people who follow you, and after that I will go out.' And he went out from Pharaoh in hot anger. And the Lord said to Moses, Pharaoh will not listen to you, that my wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt. Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh, and the Lord hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he did not let the people of Israel go out of his land. Pray with me.
1:43 Father, we need you. On a Friday night, these precious people have come. And, Lord, we're hungry for your word. In a day where there is a famine in the land, not of water nor of bread, but of the word of God, may it be found in abundance in this house and may be delivered in the power of the Holy Spirit. It may be received and not only received, may it be retained.
2:11 Not only retained, may it be applied. May your word be applied. Lord, may the only person be seen and heard in this place is Jesus. Only you can do that work, Lord, and we call upon the Holy Spirit because his ministry is to glorify Christ. You know when a man is filled with the Holy Spirit and you know when a ministry is led by the spirit, when Jesus Jesus is exalted.
2:35 Lord, let no man be exalted because you will not work with such a man. You will not work with such a ministry. And so, Lord, we long for Christ to be known. And may that be so, especially in light of these verses. May there be a fresh stirring in our hearts concerning one aspect of Jesus that is so precious, and that is his blood.
2:53 We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen. You may be seated. We're gonna spend most of our time in Exodus chapter 12, and it might sound familiar for a lot of us, but we touched on it briefly during during, Good Friday this past year. But we're gonna briefly talk about chapter 11 just so we can have that appropriate transition into chapter 12.
3:23 And so what can we say in light of the verses that we just read in in chapter 11? We're just going to open it up right off the bat so people can discuss. Are there some verses that maybe popped out to you or maybe some insight that you would like to touch on? What can we say about chapter 11 of Exodus? Yes.
3:43 says that the Lord gave favor gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians.
3:49 Oh, so it's like you're beginning to see that, like, you know, through these plagues, his people are glorified. You know, these these are people who are respectful. So it's really just, you know, whatever whatever is against them is channeled from one person, Pharaoh.
4:03 Yes. The Lord gave favor. Yes. What else can we say? Which is important actually.
4:12 The Lord gave favor, right, in the sight of the Egyptians. Moreover, the man Moses was very great in the land of Egypt. Now let's ask this question. Who made Moses great? Moses or God?
4:24 You guys remember Genesis chapter 11 with Babylon and the Tower Of Babel? What was their phrase? What was their desire? What was their pursuit? Let us do what?
4:37 Make a name for ourselves. You remember that? Let us make a name for ourselves. And then when you go to Genesis chapter 12, what does God say to Abraham? He says, I will make your name great.
4:55 In other words, God is the one who promotes. God is the one who gives favor. God is the one who elevates. When man tries to elevate himself just like the people of the Tower Of Babel, you're in for it. You do what you need to do for the Lord and his promotion and his elevation is completely up to him.
5:16 That's what we see with Moses because he was known as what? The meekest man on the earth right? We know the the Holy Spirit's the author because it's not very meek for you to write that about yourself, and that's later on in the book of Numbers. What else can we say of chapter 11? Yes.
5:34 It's interesting that Moses
5:38 it says he's going to not only let them go, but drive them out completely. And he's seeing this god that's doing these incredible things and, Moses wanting to to change but he he wants nothing to do with it. He'd rather just get rid of them than to deal with this God anymore.
5:54 That's a powerful statement isn't it? That you can reject God completely and I'll flip the perspective that when God delivers a people or delivers an individual, you know how He does it? Completely. When He saves, He saves. When He sets free, whom the Son sets free, is free indeed.
6:19 That's not some cute saying. That's a reality. That's what happens when Christ touches somebody's life, so we have to ask ourselves, did it happen to me? Now, does it mean that when you're a believer you don't struggle? Does it mean that you don't wrestle?
6:34 It just means that you have now a victory over sin and yes we are tempted, yes we fight, and just a side note we know this but a great indication amongst many others that you are walking with the Lord is not that you do not know sin or do not experience sin or fall into sin, it's that you have a new relationship with sin and that you fight with sin instead of so easily giving yourself over to it. I'm gonna drive you out completely and yes we know that he's gonna drive him out but that's God's desire anyway. Because what? Pharaoh tried to give these negotiations right just like the devil does today. You want to serve God?
7:11 Okay stay in Egypt. You want to serve God? Stay in close proximity. You want to serve God? Okay, the men go.
7:16 Don't touch the family part. You want to serve God? Don't bring sacrifice. No, no, no, no. Because God has one desire when you follow Jesus and that you do it wholeheartedly.
7:25 We're going to do it completely. Yes, what else can we say?
7:28 In the verse four it says that, that the true Lord God we may help out into his future.
7:34 Yes. Would you wanna enlighten or elaborate on that? On that verse?
7:42 That the Lord will come to Egypt.
7:46 Yeah, so here we go. He himself in this final plague is gonna be in the midst. And yes, he was working, but we see this very, he's making it clear, I'm gonna be in the midst this time, and I'm gonna come. And this is the final plague, and it's a very severe plague. What else can we say?
8:06 Look at verse eight. And all these your servants shall come down to me, bow down to me, saying, 'Get out, you and all the people who follow you, and after that I will go out.' And he went out from Pharaoh in hot anger. This doesn't tell us why Moses was angry, but let's just have a conversation about it. Why do you think Moses was angry?
8:32 Pharaoh's ignorance. Pharaoh's resistance. After all, what did we learn about the plagues? One of the things about God's characteristic and God's attribute concerning the 10 plagues, what did we learn about God through those 10 plagues? Because we're almost done.
8:47 Something about the plagues, why not one plague? He does 10, why? He's merciful and patient, and yet Pharaoh still resists the call of God to surrender. And Moses the messenger says, How much more do you need to see before you surrender? And you're not going to surrender.
9:06 Notice he walks out because his faith has been sealed. What we learn in this chapter, if we're going to learn anything in this short chapter, is that God is patient, but eventually His patient runs out. It's true. For every man. God calls and he can call once, he can call 10 times, we've heard this over and over throughout the book of Exodus, and up to this point, Pharaoh has reached his finish line.
9:26 And we see in verse seven that there's gonna be what between the people of Israel and Egypt? A distinction. A distinction. And we talked about a distinction between Israel and Egypt. And here in this final plague, there's going to be a final distinction, and it is probably one of the most significant and weighty distinctions throughout these plagues, and it has to do about a certain element.
9:52 Verse six talks about there will be a great cry in all of Egypt, like one that has never been before.
10:00 Basically, you know, I know this is not exactly where you're probably wanting to go.
10:07 You know, if you look back, I think it's Exodus one, how Pharaoh decides to kill only Egyptian, the Israelite babies. God's not turning a blind eye to that. He saw that and he's like, he's gonna do something about it and he's making the remark that not only am I going to bring this plague over Egypt, but this is gonna mark Egypt for history, like this is this is there's nothing greater than this that's gonna happen. And we look through the course of history of Egypt and you know seeing what's happened and it's not been little, it's been great things, but nothing will come up to this.
10:49 Powerful point. And if you even go back to verse three or verse two, speak now in the hearing of the people that they ask every man of his neighbor and every woman of her neighbor for silver and gold jewelry. Why? He says, You make sure that you tell the Israelites that before they leave Egypt that they ask for the gold and the silver of the people of Egypt. Why?
11:13 They won't leave empty handed? Sure. What does it speak about God though?
11:19 Who cares about that everyday life?
11:25 He's preparing for them long term.
11:26 Long term, sure, but it's more about the character of God concerning his justice. That they mistreated the people of Israel for so long and now God is bringing retribution. And what's so great in light of the Christian walk concerning our deliverance from Egypt is that when He does deliver us He is faithful also to give to us what Satan attempted to rob from us. He blesses us, and He redeems the years that the locusts have eaten. And so they're not going to go empty handed, they're going to go with blessing, they're going to go with something, and that's important.
12:03 But we come back to that question about distinction. We talked about the distinction in the other plagues, what was the one distinction amongst what? What was the the flies? Remember that one? What else?
12:13 There was another thing amongst the distinction. Life, there was the livestock that was alive amongst the people of Goshen, the Israelites in Egypt. There was another distinction, what was it?
12:24 Darkness, and what was the opposite of darkness? Light, and there's one more element. And those are all something that we can apply to our faith. The swarmer flies can't touch us, that when they come to investigate, they will see livestock, meaning when they come to see Goshen and to see the people of God, the people who are in Egypt should see life, when they come to see where there's all darkness and it's blinding darkness, and it's the darkness that can be felt, when they look into and peek into Goshen they see light, we are supposed to be in light, we have revelation, we have truth. And there's one final distinction, what is it?
12:59 The blood. Oh precious is the flow that makes me white as snow. We're talking at prayer meeting to try to look at Exodus chapter 12 without your prophetic glasses on. Take off your prophetic glasses and try to just read it plain in its immediate context, but how hard is it to read Exodus chapter 12, Prophetic glasses on or off. It shouts the gospel.
13:27 It shouts the blood. Every verse has an insight concerning Jesus Christ. Can somebody please open up one Corinthians five verse seven? And if you have it just shout it out. Don't be like irreverent but just with a loud voice.
13:45 Five verse seven. First Corinthians five verse seven.
13:52 Cleanse out the old leaven.
13:54 It's okay. I thought that would happen. Go ahead.
13:57 Cleanse out the old leaven like maybe a new lump as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb
14:03 For Christ who? Our Passover Lamb. And we think, okay, yeah, He's our Passover Lamb the same way that the blood saved the Egyptians, the blood saves us, oh it goes much deeper than that. So we begin in verse one of chapter 12 because the distinction, the final distinction, we talked about the flies, we talked about the light, we talked about the livestock, we talked about here we're gonna talk about the blood. Verse one, The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, this month shall be for you the beginning of months.
14:39 It shall be the first month of the year for you. Tell all the congregation of Israel that on the tenth day of this month every man shall take a lamb according to their fathers' houses, a lamb for a household. And if the household is too small for a lamb, then he and his nearest neighbor shall take according to the number of persons, according to what each can eat. You shall make your count for the lamb. Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male, a year old.
15:06 You may take from the sheep or from the goats, and you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month, when the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill their lambs at twilight. Let's begin from verse one. What's the instruction? It's a very interesting instruction. Yes, Gil.
15:25 He's changing the Jewish calendar.
15:28 He's changing the Jewish calendar. Do you notice this? He says, the Lord said to Moses and Eris in the land of Egypt, this month shall be for you the beginning of months. Now there are two calendars concerning the Jews. You have the religious calendar, which is this one, and what's the other one?
15:44 The civil calendar. So this one marks the religious calendar. This is a very significant, instruction here because it's not just for the sake of giving a calendar, it's because of a message behind it. This month shall be for you the beginning of months. It shall be the first month of the year for you.
16:02 Now why is that important concerning the Passover Lamb? When you think about New Year's, why is New Year's exciting for some people?
16:13 It's a new beginning. It's a new start. So here we are with this calendar, and it's going to mark a new beginning, but don't miss it. It's in light of the Passover lamb. In light of the Passover lamb being sacrificed, it would commence a new beginning.
16:30 So believers, when you accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, it marks a new beginning in your life. It's a new chapter in your life. It's a new outlook on life. It's a new start in life. It's a fresh start concerning our Passover lamb.
16:48 The blood makes all things new which is important because it's not only going to mark a new beginning just like you and me, they were to remember year after year where they came from. They were to remember every new year in the religious calendar, Oh yeah, we were slaves for generations to come. You know this isn't necessarily a strict application concerning that but I think it's important in light of our walk with the Lord. I have a question for you. Do you ever just think every time that time of the year comes around when you first got saved, do you ever think about where you came from?
17:28 Now I'm not one to advocate you should know the exact day and the exact hour and the exact verse that you heard and the exact worship song that was playing. Not everybody knows that exact moment But you do have this understanding that there was a time in which I made a decision to follow Christ even though you do grew up in you did grow up in the church and some people say I don't even remember I just started following Jesus as early as I can remember praise God that's the best testimony in the world. You didn't have to go through all the junk in the world to get saved. You dedicated your life to Christ and the fruit of that is that you're still walking with Christ, praise be to God. But for those who do know a time when they gave their life to Christ, I have a question, I mean, do you just ever at that time of the year just stop and reflect where you came from and how far God has brought you?
18:11 Because that was the purpose for the Israelites. They were to look back and say look how far God has brought us, look at the land that we're in, look at the fruit that's in my life, look at the provision, his promises are true. On a personal basis for me it's every it's just convenient, it's every January. So every time that new year comes around I just take that time just and reflect. It's a new year and this is the same time that the Lord really opened my eyes.
18:36 And I just remember who I was before and how God has brought me through. And I look after year after year can I tell you something? If you walk with the Lord, if you walk with the Lord really and you abide in Him every year gets better and better. Every year gets better and better. He does something new.
18:53 Doesn't mean that you don't go through problems. In the midst of the problems there's still testimonies. And so God says, Yeah, it's gonna be a marking of a new day, of a new beginning, but it's also gonna be something for you to look back on. It's a marker for you. In light of the Passover Lamb concerning Jesus Christ it's the same thing.
19:13 He starts fresh, He gives us a blank slate. And you know that when you were born again it felt like everything was new. Everything was new. And it's amazing to speak to somebody who comes to faith, who just got it, who just really gave everything to the Lord, and they express this desire, I just want to start fresh. It's like, I just want to do everything new.
19:37 I just want to do this right now. And not because they're obligated, because they have tasted and seen that the Lord is good. It's a beautiful experience. It says here in verse three, Tell all the congregation of Israel that on the tenth day of this month every man shall take a lamb according to their father's houses, a lamb for a household. So what's happening there?
19:55 So now he gives a specific day. So it's not just important for the Israelites nor is it just important for us as Christians concerning the application. Yes, Jesus gives us a new beginning. It's about to get prophetic. It's about to get really prophetic, and you're gonna see the harmony of this book, that from Exodus to John chapter 12, if somebody can open up to John chapter 12 verse one, You're gonna see why this is important.
20:23 So they they get the lamb on the tenth day and keep it for how long?
20:34 Fourteen it's on the fourteenth day. So how many days is that total?
20:37 On the tenth of fourteenth.
20:39 Right. So four days. We have four days. Has anybody ever owned a lamb before? It's a random question.
20:45 You maybe have eaten a lamb, but I'm asking if you've owned a lamb. You've owned a lamb? In Jordan. In Jordan. Did you did you perform the Passover?
20:56 Yes. Have you ever is there any who here has a pet? Okay. So you can imagine the emotional connection made with this animal. I mean a lamb, lambs are adorable creatures, they're not hideous creatures.
21:12 So there's almost this emotional aspect that's brought into this now concerning the family even if they had kids they would name the lamb, they would they would play with the lamb but God instituted that on the fourteenth day, it would be slaughtered. What was the purpose of those four days though? Was it to play with the lamb? No. What what was the reason that they were to keep it for four days?
21:37 To draw an emotional connection to the lamb, to feel like it really suffered.
21:42 that's a byproduct, but there's a deeper meaning for it concerning what they were about to perform. The lamb had to be without blemish, without spot right? So there was this investigation that took place as well. They were looking at the lamb, they were protecting the lamb, they were making sure that it met the standard of what God instituted. Now you go to John chapter 12 verse one, what does it say?
22:10 Whoever has it please read it. It's okay.
22:18 Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.
22:25 Okay. So we what is this six days what?
22:32 Before the Passover? Now go to verse 12. What happens in verse 12 of John chapter 12? On the next day, much people that were coming to the feast when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem Okay, so what feast are they celebrating? Passover.
22:51 And who comes in? To Jerusalem. Just imagine that sight for a moment. Because sometimes we read and we're like, Okay, just picture it. Picture it.
23:01 Here it is, Passover Feast every year. Pilgrims coming in. People are going out on the same week to do what? What they were supposed to do in Exodus chapter 12. They're going to choose their own lamb.
23:14 They're going to find their own baby one year old male. They're going to do that right? And so it's packed, it's busy, and they're trying to find the most perfect one in order to give that sacrifice rightly unto God. You know what God the Father does? He says, Here's my lamb.
23:35 What does it mean prophetically that he was one year old and that he had to be male? We know Jesus was male but why one year old? Because it was the prime of that lamb's life. It was when the lamb was in full strength. It wasn't too young, it wasn't too old.
23:52 Was Jesus in the prime of his life? He was. And guess what? Some would argue that he came on the exact day, on the tenth day. And when He entered into Jerusalem God the Father was presenting the Passover lamb while everybody else is looking for their lamb.
24:09 They completely missed it. And after that for days if you especially go to Matthew's gospel investigation, by who? The Pharisees and the Sadducees, they ask them questions. They try to find fault in him. What is the greatest command?
24:29 Shall we pay our taxes to Caesar? If a man marries a woman and that person dies and he has a brother and that person dies, another brother comes and that person dies and and he has she has seven husbands, what's what's gonna happen at the resurrection? They try to they try to find fault, but Peter tells us there is no deceit found in his mouth. There is no synonym. He passed the test.
24:51 Literally the same time in John chapter 12 as in Exodus chapter 12. The Passover lamb comes in and God says, without fault, perfect prime of life. And so we see here in verse four, and if the household is too small for a lamb then he and his nearest neighbors shall take according to the number of persons, according to what each can eat. You shall make your count for the lamb. Read that carefully.
25:21 What does it say there and what's the application? Yes, Evan?
25:25 The application is that the land is expensive, it's not something that can be easily discarded. You know, so it's not something that every family is gonna be able to afford, Not something that everybody can have. So he makes a way for those who'd have less. So that way, they're not treated as such that there's no division, that there's still they could still sacrifice.
25:46 And we kinda read that. I know where you're going there, we kind of read that surface level but we have to look very carefully here. It's not that there wasn't enough of the lamb, it's not what it says right? Look what it says. And if the household is too small for a lamb, not if the lamb is too small for the household.
26:05 So if there was a couple that didn't have children and there was too much of the lamb so to speak they would just partner with another family and they would all eat of the same lamb. You understand? So it's not that the lamb was too small it's that if the people were not enough. But that says something about the lamb.
26:24 You have to finish the lamb.
26:25 Yes, and that's in the next part it's gonna get in more detail. We have to finish the lamb and that's gonna be very significant. Yes?
26:32 It kind of reminds me of the burnt offering where it's like fully, like, 100%.
26:37 Yes. And when we come to the different offerings, it's gonna those all are prophetic of Jesus. When we get to Leviticus, can you believe that? We're gonna go to Leviticus. Yes, bear.
26:49 The lamb is more than enough for these people.
26:51 There it is. Not only is the lamb more than enough, the lamb is available to everyone. Nobody's left out from the lamb. Everybody has access to eat and to receive the blood of the lamb. What does the bible say in first John two:two?
27:17 First John two:two, can someone read first John two:two? And the reason why I do this is because I want you to see it in your own bibles. It's nice to turn to the page and say, Ah, there it is, and you can mark it and make the connection. First John two:two, what a glorious verse. What does it say?
27:32 And he himself disturbed to carry the Propagation.
27:36 Propagation. Propagation. Yeah.
27:39 And not for not for ours only, but also for the whole world.
27:42 Did you hear that? And he is the propitiation for our sins and not for ours. Oh, well, who's talk who is he talking about when he says ours? Who? Who's the ours?
27:58 Believers. Not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. But ours only, but also for the sins so the whole world. Hebrews two nine. Hebrews two nine.
28:21 But we see Jesus, who is made a little lower than the angels of the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honor, that he, by the grace of God, should taste death for every man. Every man. He died for our sins, not ours only, but for the whole world. And he tasted death, not for some men, for every man. Everyone had access to the lamb.
28:48 There was more than enough for every household. There was abundance. There was no limitation. Everyone could eat of the lamb. Verse five.
28:58 Your lamb shall be without blemish. A male a year old, you may take it from the sheep or from the goats, and you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month, when the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill their lambs at twilight. That's a specific timing, we won't get into that. The whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill their lambs. It's the sins of the world that put Jesus Christ on the cross.
29:23 Everyone is guilty. All men and their sins, He put upon Himself on that cross. Verse seven, and they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. What can we say about verse seven? So now they're supposed to do something.
29:44 It was not just about killing the lamb, it's not about just slaughtering the lamb, it's getting more specific now. It's about the blood of the lamb.
29:51 There has to be evidence of of change.
29:56 So if this is, like, prophetically speaking of Christ, you know, in our lives, then there has to be a sense of the blood of Christ in our lives.
30:07 Okay. You're you're you're in that lane. You're in that lane. Why is this significant? Why is it significant that they were to take the blood and put it on the doorpost?
30:19 So they stand out, yes, we're all in that lane, but it says something in the context of Exodus. Yes, so when God does pass over, he will see it, yes, that is one element of it. Yes? Evidence that they killed Him? Yes, we're all there.
30:37 But there's something about the Egyptian culture that makes it even more significant. So we gotta go now we gotta go to Exodus chapter eight. Exodus chapter eight is gonna tell us. Exodus chapter eight. Go to verse 25 with me please.
30:57 Then Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron and said, Go, sacrifice to your God within the land. So he's saying, sacrifice in Egypt. If you want to do this whole sacrifice and you want to worship God, do it within the land. But look what Moses says, but Moses said, It would not be right to do so, for the offerings we shall sacrifice to the Lord our God are an abomination to the Egyptians. If we sacrifice offerings abominable to the Egyptians before their eyes, will they not stone us?
31:27 So it's not just about applying the blood. There's a cost to doing it. There's a risk in doing it. So the blood was public, And God knowing that, tests the faith of the Israelites and says, I want you out of all the places, he says put it on the doorpost so people can see it. Sacrifice in the land so people can notice it.
31:52 Why? Because our faith is supposed to be public. Our faith is supposed to be public. And two, we're willing, must be willing, to pay the price of whatever persecution we receive for accepting and applying the blood on our lives. So there's a cost to it, and the cost is you can get killed for applying the blood.
32:12 That's what Moses was saying, we can't do this here and God knowing that says do it now. Is your faith in this? Do it. Put the blood on your doorpost, even though the Egyptians might see it. And so what does that say to us as believers?
32:28 Because it was abominable in the eyes of the Egyptians. Yes.
32:33 It speaks out with that verse for the message of the cross is it is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to those who are being saved it is the power of God.
32:43 Yes, yes, yes. This gospel is foolishness to those who are perishing, but it is the power of God to us. Blood. Some criticize and say the slaughterhouse religion, have you ever heard that term? It's in different parts where they use it more than others.
32:58 You have a slaughterhouse religion, blood and applying blood and you sing about blood, yes. I'm not ashamed of the gospel for it is the power of God unto salvation. So we should not be ashamed of this gospel, we should not be timid about this gospel. Paul wasn't, they weren't, neither should you and me. So they applied the blood knowing well that it was abominable in the eyes of the Egyptians and they just had to make up a choice and that choice was I'd rather do what God tells me
33:30 to do than what the Egyptians want me to do.
33:32 That's right, they applied the blood. But as we go back, we looked at that, it was each household that needed to take a lamb. Why is that significant? Each household had to make a choice. Just like today, each household has to make a choice.
33:51 Each individual needs to make a choice to go and get the lamb for themselves. We need to do that. We need to make the choice for ourselves to apply the blood over our houses. It's the same. We have to make that respective choice.
34:03 We ourselves have to step out and do it. Very simple, but it's rich as well. Is there anything else we can say about verse seven? Yes. It was a public confession of faith.
34:19 For those who are here on Good Friday there is one element that we talked about. It
34:30 It represents the scars on Jesus.
34:32 Some people say that it it does represent the cross. I personally I don't know if I can go that far, but there's something about the application of the blood. We're gonna come to that in a moment.
34:48 That's where they eat the lambs.
34:50 They're gonna eat the lamb in a moment. Let me ask this question. When they applied the blood, where did they not put the blood on the ground, on the floor? Why? Reverence.
35:05 You don't step on the blood. You don't trample underfoot the son of God. That's Hebrews 10. You don't willingly take the blood and make a disgrace out of it. And so when he said apply the blood they put it on the sides and on the top but they dare not put it on the ground.
35:23 You don't step on something you have reverence for, you you don't step on something that you don't have respect for. It's the same thing with us. You don't take the grace of Jesus Christ and His blood and use it as something where you can dance upon with your lifestyle that's contrary to the word of God, that's trampling underfoot the Son of God, that is being irreverent to the blood. No. You apply it over you.
35:47 It covers you. It's not under your feet. You don't trample on it and that's significant for us today because people trample underfoot the blood of Jesus Christ by disgracing it, by taking it for granted, by not understanding that it wasn't meant for you to live how you want. It was meant for you to be delivered not only from the wrath, but out of Egypt. And that's what we're gonna find out next.
36:11 They shall eat the flesh that night. Roasted on the fire with unleavened bread and bitter herbs, they shall eat it. Do not eat any of it raw or boiled in water, but roast it, its head with its legs and its inner parts. You shall let none of it remain until the morning. Anything that remains until the morning, you shall burn.
36:32 What can we say about those verses?
36:40 It kinda reminds me of John when he says, anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has become more.
36:46 Absolutely. It's that language of eating. Eat of me. Drink of me. Christ wasn't shy of using that kind of language.
36:58 And so this is where it gets really exciting, and you know where we're going with this. That it's not just about applying the blood, it's about eating the lamb. So many people apply the blood and they stop and they don't know how to eat the lamb. What does eating represent? What's about eating that's so significant?
37:18 Why would Jesus He could have said a million different things but he said eat me. Becomes part of you. You eat something and that thing that you eat, that piece of bread now becomes in you. It's one with you. That's what Jesus is saying when he's saying eat of me.
37:36 I wanna reside in you. What else? Nutrition? Yes. That is one part.
37:43 They're gonna need some nutrition because they're leaving soon.
37:46 The blood is this public statement where it's satisfying, where it's like, okay, this is your public image, this is what you do. But also you're eating of the lamb, you're taking it in turnals, it's a heart thing. Yes. It's not so mental. It's it's in unison.
38:00 with Beautiful. It's not just about people just knowing that I have the blood. It's about me knowing and having it in my heart. Yes.
38:12 Would it be too far of a stretch to saying they had to consume the whole lamb? So that's like us and our relationship with Christ that we can't take bits and pieces that we like. We have to consume all of it. It's either you're all for Jesus or you're none.
38:26 Absolutely. He says eat it all. And we're gonna get to that in a moment, so I'm gonna hold on to that. I just want to keep talking about this idea of consuming him. Yes.
38:38 Why is he saying eat it? Where are they about to go? Into the wilderness. They're gonna be delivered, right? And so they need strength.
38:46 You cannot survive in this life if you're a Christian and not eat of Jesus daily. Daily. You need to eat of Him and that is transferred from the lamb to what? We're gonna talk about it. Something else is used that signifies Christ.
39:00 What is it? Manna. Right? We're gonna talk about manna and that's also of Christ and they had to eat it daily. And so it's this understanding of Christ fulfilling and strengthening and giving us the nutrients necessary for us to be effective in this wilderness journey.
39:17 That's the whole point. But I'm surprised, nobody's mentioned this yet. When you eat, I hope you eat To enjoy it. To enjoy it. You wanna enjoy the food that you're eating.
39:34 Do we enjoy Jesus? Enjoying Him, delighting in Him, being able to say He's good. Eating of Jesus means enjoying Him, delighting in Him, meditating upon Him, feasting on Him. The Bible gives that language throughout, that they will eat out of the abundance of your house and drink from the river of your delights. All this different language of tasting Him, knowing that He is what He says He is.
40:09 And once again, I'll take it back. So many people apply the blood, Oh, I have the blood brother, yes. I'm blood bought and Jesus Christ died on the cross for my sins. That's great, fantastic. Do you enjoy Jesus?
40:22 Is He a delight to your soul? When's the last time you ate of Him and you can testify, Oh He's good? That language, please hear me very carefully, that language is so unfamiliar amongst Christians today. The blood language is not, the eating of Him is. So unfamiliar.
40:43 You say, How do you know? Just ask somebody who Jesus is to them and you'll know if they eat of Jesus. You can find out a lot in thirty seconds when you go up to somebody and say, Who's Jesus to you? Thirty seconds. Thirty seconds.
40:59 And obviously that can be exaggerated because people can say the right things and live differently but you get the understanding that when somebody's genuine with the Lord, when somebody has gone beyond just applying the blood and just saying yes Jesus Christ is my Lord when they daily eat of Christ you know. You can know by talking about Jesus. You can know how they pray. You can know about the testimonies that they had of the Lord. And so that reality is so foreign today.
41:29 Really is. It's really really unfamiliar. And it's so unfamiliar that when you speak about it people look at you like, what are you talking about? Eating Jesus, delighting in Jesus, tasting that he's good, what does that mean? Oh, it seems like you haven't had a sample yourself but it's available.
41:49 It's available to every man. If you hunger for righteousness you'll be filled. The only prerequisite for you to know what I'm talking about is you being humble and hungry. Humble and hungry. The two prerequisites and people can't do it.
42:05 People can't acknowledge, Oh yeah, I know Jesus, He's awesome, praise God, yes. There's no cry in the heart to say there must be more than this. I've experienced so much but surely there is more. And the humility to say, god, I need you, and the hunger to say, not only do I realize I need more of you, I'm going to pursue you. I'm going to pursue you.
42:32 Eating of Jesus. And as Tim said, you shall let none of it remain until the morning. So consuming all of Jesus. Now you already mentioned this so we can talk about it. It's important that when you have a relationship with the Lamb of God that you don't pick out the things that you like and that pick out the things that you don't feel comfortable with.
42:55 You take all of Him or none of Him. You know so many people say different things and I say here's some scissors why don't you just cut out of your bible? If you're so strong on that when it's so clear in the bible why don't you just cut it out? You need to take all of Him, His justice and His mercy, His grace and His wrath. You can't just pick and choose and that's another thing that's so familiar today.
43:21 It's this unbalanced view of Jesus. And Christ says eat all of me. Eat all of me. But not only that, he gave specific instructions. He says don't roast and sorry, he said roast, don't boil.
43:36 So he gives specific instructions of how to eat of him. Now why is that important? Well, I didn't know that. I don't cook, so I don't know I don't know what that looks like. So yes.
44:02 Saying that when we worship God, when we commune with Him,
44:06 That's it. I'm gonna challenge you with a thought. Did you hear what Gil said? He says that God has given us when it comes to eating of Jesus, I'm talking about communion and relationship and drawing near to him, he's given us instructions on how to do it. So you can have the hunger and the desire, but approach him wrongly, and approach Him inappropriately, and not approach Him according to the prescribed instructions that He's given us in His word.
44:37 So I want to challenge you with this, you know God has given us how we are to approach Him. One through his word, one through prayer, but it's this whole understanding of worship and everything else. And I'm always challenged with this stuff when it comes to worship, when it comes to song especially. Whenever it comes to song, I have to ask myself, do I wanna listen to this because I like to hear it or because God wants to hear it? Now I can love certain music and love certain types, but when it comes to worship, is it about my preference or about God's preference?
45:08 Am I singing because I'm singing knowing that he hears us and this is what he wants to hear, or is it about how I feel when I listen to it? Do you see what I'm talking about? Sometimes we can try to eat of the Lord, but do it our way when God has given us the way to do it and to approach him. And the best way is when you know the word, because this is the road map into his presence. You cannot divorce the bible and prayer.
45:32 You can't divorce bible and singing. You can't divorce bible and anything. If you wanna know Christ more, if you wanna really get deeper, you can do and there's so many please hear me. There's genuine people that are, Yes, we want revival. Yes, we wanna see God move.
45:46 Oh, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. And they're doing it, but not according to the word. They're trying to pursue this, and they're not doing it according to scripture. And they're just running around in circles. Because God has prescribed a way to approach him.
46:02 And they wanna try to do it their way, and you can hunger and miss it. So He says, Yes, okay. Eat of me, but this is how you eat of me. This is how you approach me, this is how you see me, this is how you operate in the house of God. God forbid, we cannot do this thing called church without the scriptures.
46:19 And so we need His instruction in order to really enjoy Him. Yes.
46:41 There's a distinction. When you do it God's way, it's obvious. When you do it your way, it's obvious as well. But look at verse 11, In this manner you shall eat it, with your belt fastened, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand, and you shall eat it in haste. So there's another instruction there of how to eat it.
47:02 What does that have to do with us though? Well, we know what it has to do with them. What does it have to do with them?
47:11 this real quick. Get your stuff ready. Don't take off your shoes. Once you eat, get ready to leave. Yes.
47:18 So what does that have to do with that? So we're talking about that. So in light of our walk
47:22 Is that like our great commission basically? Like after we we consume Christ, we're called to go out into the nations, you know, to proclaim the word. Is that
47:33 there's the element of going out is there, so you're in the right lane, but there's a reason, there's a connection concerning Egypt more than anything.
47:40 It's kind of a parallel whereas, like, in your past life, you're living in slavery. You're living within the city of Egypt, and then now you're getting ready to go. You're getting ready to walk within your freedom. You're going into the promised land that is Israel.
47:55 Hebrews eleven twenty eight
48:03 So they're doing this by faith, by eating and leaving, is that what you're saying? Okay. Just leaving the world and going to where God calls you. That's it. That's where it is.
48:12 Pay attention. The whole idea of the dress was that they were to eat of it, but in light of a certain heart posture. What was that heart posture? We're not associated with Egypt anymore. See, hear me.
48:24 You can't eat of the lamb and be comfortable in Egypt. You can't eat of the lamb and be comfortable in Egypt. What does Egypt represent? The world. You can't eat of him and plan to be comfortable and stay in the world.
48:39 Doesn't happen. And people do that as well. Do you know why so many Christians are frustrated when they're trying to pursue Christ? When they hear convicting messages and they go, Yeah, I'm gonna go change, I'm gonna seek God. Do you know why they're frustrated?
48:50 Because they haven't divorced themselves from Egypt yet. And friendship with the world is enmity with God. That's what the Bible says. Old Testament, New Testament. Friendship with the world.
49:01 When you partner with the world, agree with the world, and walk in the world, there's enmity between you and God. What he was saying here is that you're gonna eat this, you're gonna eat of me, you're gonna eat the lamb. But your heart posture is this, that you're not part of Egypt anymore, you're leaving. This attitude of, this is not my world, I'm not gonna be comfortable, I'm not gonna eat this comfortably while I'm in Egypt. I'm eating this with the heart posture that I'm not part of Egypt anymore.
49:25 You can't fellowship with Christ and try to grow in Christ and eat of Christ if you love the things in Egypt. It just doesn't work. So God says it's ready to go. And it's the idea also of getting ready to leave this world as well. Get get ready to leave this world.
49:39 Stay ready. Get your belt fastened. Get your shoes on. Always have this mindset that it's time to go and leave at any moment. That's the Bible throughout the New Testament.
49:49 And that's the responsibility of this every Sunday, this every Friday, that throughout the week when you go through work, and you get to you have bills, and you have family things that you need to do, and you got to organize for Thanksgiving, you got to organize for Christmas, you come to church. You know what happens at church? You're reminded, Hey, don't get too comfortable here. Hey, don't get too stressed out here. Hey, don't get too familiar here.
50:09 Get ready to go. Get your belt fastened. Get your shoes on. Hold that staff in your hand because Jesus can be calling you at any moment. And you leave this place with a fresh perspective for a fresh week.
50:18 Okay, Jesus can come back Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. You can come back at any moment. Dress and get ready. Verse 12. For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night.
50:31 And I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast, and all the gods of Egypt, sorry, I will execute judgement. So we know this, that part of why he brought about these plagues was because some believe that each plague targeted a specific deity concerning the Egyptians. I am the Lord. Verse 13. The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are.
50:54 And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. What can we say here? Yes.
51:04 It's like just like we are killing the blood of Jesus that the blood of God destroy us.
51:13 Yes. I see justice for the Israelite boys, little the children that were killed at the beginning of Exodus.
51:23 He's striking the Egyptians the same way they struck the Israelites. Yes.
51:29 What else can we say, Esmerald?
51:33 Ma'am. Well, it says he'll execute judgment, and if we go back to verse 11, this really interesting verse that says, not a dog will growl against the people of Israel or against the beast. And, in Egypt, I think I remember that the dog was like the representative of the god of death, Anubis. And, what what they saw as, like, abomination what the Egyptians saw as an abomination was actually a way of salvation from death, whereas at least dogs that represent death did not growl.
52:18 Right. So one of the goddesses was a symbol of a dog that represented death. And so when he's saying in verse 11 chapter 11 verse seven is that not a dog shall growl, so death won't even be, won't even threaten you is what you're saying. Beautiful. Just one simple phrase in that verse that is so powerful.
52:38 It is so powerful. It should set us all ablaze for God. It should stir our hearts to worship as we're gonna do in a moment. The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, period. When I see the blood, Period.
53:03 That's all he needs to see. Not when I see the blood and that you do good for the next four days. Not when I see the blood and that you ate it just right and you cooked it at the right temperature. When I see the blood. That's all I need to see.
53:25 That's all he needs to see in your life and my life. The blood of Jesus. Not the blood of Jesus and your good works. Not the blood of Jesus and your sacraments. Not the blood of Jesus and your church history.
53:35 Not the blood of Jesus and how many verses you memorized. Not the blood of Jesus and did you make sure you evangelize at work today, not the blood of Jesus and how many Facebook statuses you posted, the blood of Jesus alone. Alone. If it was true in Exodus chapter 12, it's true for us today in the new covenant. That God the Father when he looks upon your life and when he will one day you better believe it will bring the wrath of God upon this world.
53:57 You know what he's going to be looking for over your life? The blood. And when he sees the blood he passes over. Just think about the Israelites too. I mean, put yourself in their shoes.
54:14 This whole concept is foreign and God has asked him to wait in the house. There's gonna be this angel of death that's gonna come and destroy the firstborn. Put the blood on your doorpost. And there's this one preacher who gave this illustration about how there's one Israelite in one house and another Israelite in the same house, and this Israelite is so confident. He's so confident about the blood.
54:37 Yeah, God said it's there. And here's another Israelite that's kind of shaken and there's a little bit of different emotions going on. And it wasn't based on the strength of one's trust or the other. The trust both were there, but it was just about the blood, about the fact that the blood was there and they were both under the blood. It's so beautiful.
54:57 And yes, we are supposed to fully trust in the Lord, and we're supposed to put that blood. In different seasons of our life, trust in the blood. Trust in the blood alone. It's not about what you can do or what you don't do, it's about Him. It's about Him.
55:12 Really we hear that and we say amen to that but we're not living in that reality. Some people are not really living in that. They're not resting in that. See they stayed in the house and they ate of the lamb, they enjoyed, they were being sustained by the lamb, but in a sense they were supposed to rest, just wait it out, Just stay and abide. That's it.
55:35 I mean, don't there's nothing else you need to do. It's the blood. Now I understand we can get into this discussion for the next fifteen minutes that, yes, when you do have faith, it does do something in your life, but we are justified by faith. It's by faith alone. In fact in the New Testament, part of the letters, and we'll talk about these letters someday, is: Yeah, it's about justification by faith but it's also by circumcision.
55:59 So it's the blood and circumcision. That's not the blood completely. And so I want to ask you tonight simply we're gonna sing about the blood in a moment, but in your own heart are you living in the freedom and the rest in the blood that it's over your life and that when God looks at you he doesn't even he looks at the blood. He He looks the blood over you. That's what we need to trust in, his blood.
56:29 My last question tonight is, are you confident that you've applied the blood to your life? That you saw the spotless lamb of God, and you realize that he is a spotless lamb of God, and you realize that he's the only spotless lamb of God, he's the only one that can save, and you've said I need his blood over my life. Have you have you made that conscious decision? And if you have, are you resting in that decision? And resting and knowing that it's by his blood alone.
57:01 Bow your heads with me, please.
